About the Stone

Topaz is an aluminium silicate that forms in granite and volcanic rock; Brazil is the great source. Natural blue topaz is rare and pale, and the saturated sky, Swiss and London blues sold worldwide are produced by irradiating and heat-treating colourless topaz — a standard, stable and permanent treatment. December's second birthstone, alongside turquoise and tanzanite.

Wearing & Care

Sterling silver tarnishes slowly in air; a silver polishing cloth keeps it bright. Put it on last, after perfume and lotion, and take it off for showers, swimming and sleep. Hard (Mohs 8) but brittle: topaz has a perfect cleavage and a sharp knock at the wrong angle can split it cleanly, so treat it as fragile despite the hardness. No ultrasonic, no steam. Cool water and a soft cloth; store it apart from other jewelry. Cleanse it with moonlight.
