About the Stone
Ethiopian Opal comes from the Wollo (Welo) province, where it formed in volcanic rock rather than the sediments that hold Australian opal — which is why it is hydrophane: it drinks water. The play-of-colour is structural, microscopic silica spheres diffracting light, not pigment.
Wearing & Care
Sterling silver tarnishes slowly in air; a silver polishing cloth keeps it bright. Put it on last, after perfume and lotion, and take it off for showers, swimming and sleep. Never soak, submerge or cleanse it in water — hydrophane opal absorbs it, goes glassy, loses its fire, and can craze as it dries; the damage is often permanent. Keep it from oils, lotion, perfume, soap and dyes for the same reason, and from heat, direct sun and very dry air. No ultrasonic, no steam, no salt. Soft and brittle: take it off for hand-washing. Cleanse it dry only — moonlight suits it perfectly.
